First, Twelve

Thursday, April 2nd, 2009

I read Seth Godin’s blog from time to time.  I started reading it when I was into web design.  When I gave up web design for the sake of the gospel (I may post about this soon), I stopped reading all of the blogs that I read that had to do with web design.  But there were a few blogs that I continued to read because I thought that their message was much broader than web development.

Today Seth posted about the power of an idea spreading by those who believe it.  He suggests finding ten people who really love your product/idea/message, and investing in them so that they have the resources to then tell ten others each, and you will see how fast your message spreads.

I immediately thought of Jesus.  He did not find ten, but twelve.  He invested in them for three years.  For three years they didn’t get it.  But once Jesus rose from the dead, they got it.  And they spread the message not to twelve each, but to hundreds if not thousands each.

Then I thought about our churches today.  We often struggle to find one or two people willing to “give us a chance” by coming to church.  Despite our churches being full of believers, very few are added each year.  If we truly believe the message, and love it, we would be spreading it so fast and so passionately that people around us would want whatever it is that we are so excited about.

This resurrection season, think about what Christ did for you, and think about what you can do for Christ.

I’m Not Making a Resolution

Monday, December 29th, 2008

I’ve toyed with blogs from time to time, but have never maintained one regularly (i.e. posting more than once a month).  I hope this one is different.  I’m not making a resolution about it or anything (in fact, I’m starting before the new year to emphasize this point), but I do want to be a better blogger in 2009.

But we are making resolutions about other things.  Abby and I are making a resolution to start praying together more (as a couple) in 2009.  We’ll start by praying at transition times (before eating, before bed time, before traveling together, etc), but hope to increase this to just praying together throughout the day (when we’re stressed, when something comes up, when we want to thank God for a blessing, etc).

In creating this blog, I’m combining all of our individual web sites into one.  I think one reason I haven’t updated our web site as often as I would have liked is that I felt like there were too many sites to update.  We had the main site (what you see now), each of the kids had their own site, and we had our wedding site.  And the lines were fuzzy.  Do I post pictures of Amber and Cory on her site, his site, or both sites?  Where do I post an article about albinism?  Why should any article be posted on one site rather than another?  I hope that having just one site to update makes updating easier.

Some of the old content from the old sites may find its way to this new blog, especially the pictures.  But for older posts and articles, visit the old sites:

I hope that maintaining a regular blog will help to sharpen my writing abilities and reasoning skills, not to mention allow friends and family to see more pictures of our kids.
